Rock climbing is a great activity for the whole family, but unless you’re bundled up and have an icepick in hand, most people don’t think about climbing in Colorado during the winter.
With the new indoor rock wall at YMCA of the Rockies – Estes Park Center, families can climb away the winter-time blues and enjoy this fun-filled adventure activity even in the harshest of conditions.
This winter, guests have the opportunity to strap in and “harness” their inner alpinist on a brand-new 35-foot climbing wall located inside the Boone Family Mountain Center. This isn’t the typical climbing wall found inside high school gyms!
Instead, the YMCA of the Rockies new climbing wall was built to resemble a real rock face. The climbing wall comes complete with cracks and ledges resembling natural holds found in the wild, and with the luxury of the wall being indoors, guests still get the opportunity to feel like their climbing outdoors in the winter, without all the snow, ice and wind that comes with a Northern Colorado winter.
With five top ropes, including two auto-belay systems, and holds scattered all over the wall, guests can choose from a variety of routes ranging in difficulty from beginner to advanced, making the new climbing wall perfect for an afternoon of family fun.
While guests must be five years old to use the climbing wall, a smaller bouldering wall is available for younger climbers or those just looking for a break from their ropes and harness.
There are no bells to ring at the top of the wall, but guests will have fun reaching for colored holds in the shapes of trucks and animals to mark their successful completion of the route.
The first of its kind at the Estes Park Center, climbing on the new wall adds to the long list of adventure activities provided by the YMCA of the Rockies all year long. Guests staying in lodging accommodations at YMCA of the Rockies pay $10/per person for an hour of climbing, gear rental included. Day users are required to pay an additional Day Pass fee of $25 per person.
