The Rockies Night Sky Experience

It is one of the most memorable moments of a YMCA of the Rockies vacation, gazing up at the night sky and viewing millions of bright stars above. There is a lot going on up there and the YMCA offers many family-friendly astronomy programs that educate and celebrate our beautiful dark night skies. Read below for some of our popular programs and check out what’s new for this summer!

(New!) IT’S ALL RELATIVE: Earth is big. And so is the Moon. And the Sun. But how big are they really? Come explore the solar system on a smaller scale and help us bring what’s out of this world back to Earth. TH, F, SAT 3:00 – 4:00 PM

MOON MASTERS: How much do you know about that big glowing ball in the night sky? Join our instructor and see what more you can discover about the Moon! TH, F, SAT 4:15 – 5:15 PM

STAR GAZING
: Drop in and check out what’s visible in our night sky. We’ll look for constellations like the Big Dipper and Draco, as well as planets, the moon, and other nifty night objects. M, T, W, SUN 9:00 – 10:30 PM

STAR STORIES: Join us to learn about some of the most famous and recognizable constellations in the sky, how these star stories were created, and even create a star story of your own! TH, F, SAT 5:30 – 6:30 PM

(New!) SUN GAZING: Come check out the sun in a new, up close, and SAFE way! EVERYDAY 3:30 – 4:30 PM

BEDTIME STORIES: (5 and under) Listen to funny animal and nature stories. Preschoolers may wear pajamas if they wish (no blankets, please). Join us at the Maude Jellison Youth Library. Tuesdays 7:00 – 8:00 PM

ASTRONOMY: Get closer looks of the night skies through our telescopes. Observe a variety of celestial objects, including the moon, planets, constellations, double stars, globular clusters, galaxies and more. Learn to identify a dozen constellations and their brightest stars. On cloudy nights we will offer an alternative indoor program that is both educational and entertaining. Remember to dress warmly for our cool Rocky Mountain evenings, and bring binoculars if you have them! TH, F, SAT 9:00 – 10:30 PM
