This summer, YMCA of the Rockies is offering a 2-night, 3-day co-ed backpacking trip for teens (ages 13- 15 and 15 – 17) in the wilderness areas of northern Colorado. It offers teens the opportunity to discover their strengths while enjoying the great outdoors. Participants will return from their backpacking experience knowing that the confidence, strength, and friendships they developed will help them take on any challenge on the trail, in the classroom, or back home in their communities.
Dates for trips are:
Weeks of July 8 (FULL) and July 22, 2019 (13 – 15 year olds)
Week of July 29, 2019 (15 – 17 year olds)
Cost for the trip is $300/week.
Participants will develop valuable outdoor skills while discovering the wonders of nature. Teens will also learn to cook their own meals, set up their own tents, and learn how to use water purification systems when out in the wilderness. This program works to remove cultural and social barriers and instead focus on acceptance and community awareness. Participants will be a part of a team that supports and accepts one another.
The program’s focus on youth development through outdoor education deeply resonates with the core values and mission of the YMCA. Brandon Reynolds, the outdoor education director at YMCA of the Rockies, provided some additional insight about why this program is so important for our youth.
“When you put a teenager in the wilderness with their peers, it takes them out of their everyday routine and creates an environment for them to think and see clearly without distractions. It takes preparation, teamwork, and resiliency to go on a successful backpacking trip. The lessons and bonds they gain from this experience can be life changing.”
The teen backpacking program at YMCA of the Rockies is a unique opportunity for teens to learn about the outdoors while simultaneously making new friendships and lifelong memories. The staff is extensively trained, the activities are carefully designed for maximum results, and the location is right next to the Rocky Mountain National Park. The Teen Backpacking trips are a specialty camp through our Day Camp program. For more information contact the Day Camp office at 970-586-3341 x 1280. Or visit the Day Camp website.
