This summer, YMCA of the Rockies is offering a 4-night, 5-day co-ed backpacking trip for teens in the wilderness areas of northern Colorado. The program is called, “BOLD & GOLD”, (boys and girls outdoor leadership development), and it offers teens the opportunity to discover their strengths while enjoying the great outdoors. Participants will return from their BOLD & GOLD experience knowing that the confidence, strength, and friendships they developed will help them take on any challenge on the trail, in the classroom, or back home in their communities.
Participants will develop valuable outdoor skills while discovering the wonders of nature. Kayaking, hiking, camping, team building, and stargazing are just a few of the activities teens will participate in during this 5-day backpacking trip. Teens will also learn to cook their own meals, set up their own tents, and learn how to use water purification systems when out in the wilderness.
This program works to remove cultural and social barriers and instead focus on acceptance and community awareness. By going for BOLD & GOLD, you will be a part of a team that supports and accepts one another. By the end of this amazing expedition, teens will have a whole new perspective on the meaning of shared responsibility through their newly equipped wild eyes and disciplined eyes.
The program’s focus on youth development through outdoor education deeply resonates with the core values and mission of the YMCA. Brandon Reynolds, the outdoor education director at YMCA of the Rockies, provided some additional insight about why this program is so important for our youth.
“When you put a teenager in the wilderness with their peers, it takes them out of their everyday routine and creates an environment for them to think and see clearly without distractions. It takes preparation, teamwork, and resiliency to go on a successful backpacking trip. The lessons and bonds they gain from this experience can be life changing.”
The BOLD & GOLD program at YMCA of the Rockies is a unique opportunity for teens to learn about the outdoors while simultaneously making new friendships and lifelong memories. The staff is extensively trained, the activities are carefully designed for maximum results, and the location is right next to the Rocky Mountain National Park.
