Faces of the Y: Katie Block

Katie Block – Programs Director

Since she was in high school, Katie Block, Programs Director at Snow Mountain Ranch, has been working with the YMCA to empower youth.

Block began at a YMCA in Chattanooga TN, where she was the Youth and Family Programs Director and worked with Youth Trust, a leadership development program which aims to empower 8th graders. In her time there, Block also served as the Assistant Director.

“I’ve found that I really enjoy working with kids of all ages. I’m glad to be in a place where I can help them to feel encouraged and give them growth opportunities,” Block said.

Block’s previous experience with youth came in handy when she was offered the position of Camp Chief Ouray (CCO) assistant director at Snow Mountain Ranch in 2011.

In her time as assistant director, Block created the CCO Youth Leadership Board. Board members work to raise funds for camp scholarships, help to train new staff members, check campers in and out, and provide feedback for the camp amongst other things. “Because CCO is intended to serve youth, I wanted to get the opinion of that age population and utilize them,” Block said.

In June of 2012, Block became the Programs Director at Snow Mountain Ranch. “We’ve done a good job of experimenting- further developing programs that were doing well and looking at other programs that weren’t,” Block said.

As the Programs Director, a large part of Block’s job is problem solving with her team. “There are a lot of plates to keep spinning. We do our best to continue to spin with excellence and not become stagnant; we’re always open to finding new programs,” Block said.

When she’s not working, Block enjoys driving through rocky Mountain National Park, going bowling, seeing live music, and going out with friends. “I’m such a people person, I just love to be with people,” Block said.

Block is still involved with Youth Trust, the program where she started, as a volunteer and mentor working to empower youth. “The YMCA has shaped who I am, not only in my career, but it has empowered me to believe that I can impact the world. I’m in a community where impacting just one person can really make an impact on the world,”

Block hopes to continue to make the guest programs experience as enjoyable as possible while carrying out the YMCA mission. “I love the mission, and the idea that the YMCA is for all,” Block said, “There is no judgment, it’s not about who’s wrong or right, it’s about everyone being loved.”
