Little did Tom Souza know that the day after his birthday (April 16th) he would be receiving an extra special gift. After working a year and eleven long months at an I.T. consulting business in Curtiba Brazil, Tom got the great news that he was offered a job at the YMCA of the Rockies Snow Mountain Ranch, launching him halfway around the world into a new and exciting seasonal experience.
“I used to care about money, but now I just care about traveling.” Finding that money and travel go hand in hand, the housekeeping position at SMR was the perfect way to see the USA while still saving money.
Housekeeping is far from Tom’s college major of Information Technology, but he is still happy to be have been selected from the large group of Brazilian applicants. “I didn’t know how to vacuum before I came here,” Tom admits. “We just don’t really have carpet in Brazil!” Tom’s mother would be proud that her son will never forget how to fold a fitted sheet and now knows the secrets to making a mirror shine.
“Improving my English is another top reason for coming to Snow Mountain Ranch,” Tom says, and since he’s been here, he’s acquired a whole new vocabulary including “gnar” and “pow-pow.” Although Tom dearly misses his family, his Volkswagon Fox, Brazillian dancing and good strong coffee, his new found love of snowboarding keeps him very busy. “Winter park is definitely the best part about working here,” Tom admits.
Since starting in December, Tom has already made great friends who hail from Peru to Pennsylvania and made countless, snowy memories. Once the winter season melts away, Tom will be extending his stay in Colorado with a summer position in Estes Park in the International Training Program.
